Ten Tips for shopping with waste in mind

  1. Remember to keep reusable or old carrier bags with you, so you can decline the next time you’re offered a plastic one.
  2. Buy loose fruit and veg to reduce on packaging - you don’t always need to use the plastic bags provided.
  3. Buy ready-recycled items, such as recycled toilet/kitchen roll.
  4. Refills, such as ink cartridges and kitchen products, can save money and cut down on the amount of packaging you have to throw away.
  5. Try to plan your meals in advance with a shopping list. This will help reduce impulse purchases that go to waste.
  6. Buy in bulk instead of individually wrapped goods.
  7. Consider buying someone an ‘experience gift’ or ask them what they want. Many unwanted presents end up in land-fill.
  8. Stay away from disposable items like paper plates, razors and batteries as much as possible.
  9. Ask yourself if your packaging be recycled? (Milk or juice in plastic bottles instead of cartons.)
  10. When making a larger or specialist purchase for example an electrical item, try to find an item that can be repaired rather than disposed of in the event of a failure.
